Wednesday Club

The Wednesday Club is a group with a long and distinguished history at Barnes.  It provides a regular opportunity for meeting friends and conversation, coupled with a sequence of speakers (including the Minister once a month) whose subjects cover a huge range of interests.  Pam Rentell takes the chair at these meetings.

The Club meets for a brief opening period of praise and prayer, followed by the speaker and conversation.  The venue is the downstairs Chapel, and the Club meets at 2.30pm each Wednesday.

CLUB OUTING TO SURREY 18TH JUNE

Mr Jim Howley with Margaret and BarbaraTen members visited Wotton and Shere in Surrey.  At Wotton, the church of St John the Evangelist sits amid fields in a valley between the downs.  The remains of a Saxon church have quite recently been found.  Mr Jim Howley, who revised the church's guidebook, met us to show us around.

St

St John's is made of the local stone, which glows almost golden in sunshine.  Unfortunately there wasn't much sunshine, and the wind in the churchyard was quite strong!

One of the Evelyn family tombs

The Evelyn family - most famously the diarist John Evelyn - have been lords of the manor for several centuries.  Their mausoleum and memorials are very impressive.  One shows a couple with all of their 22 children!

These two didn't have quite that many, but as you can see they still have a beautiful memorial.

Lucky Duck tea rooms Shere

Later, the group moved on to Shere, where the Lucky Duck tea room proved to be very busy.

Shere lived up to its claim to be the prettiest village in Surrey, with delightful cottages and lots of flowers.

Church at ShereThe village church, with its fine brasses and remains of an anchoress's chamber, is beautifully kept - and rabbits make their home in the churchyard!

Some of the group came back via the woods over the hills to East Horsley.

It was a good outing, even though the wind blew quite hard all afternoon.

Another picture of the Wotton church appears on the Recent Events page.

2008 ANNIVERSARY SERVICE

Tea (and cakes!) after the service

The Wednesday Club's leader, Pam Rentell, invited representatives from local churches in Barnes and from other Methodist churches in the area for the Anniversary service.
